The properties of materials are closely related to their internal structure. For a material of given chemical composition, the internal structure is not constant, but can vary greatly depending on:
- how the material was manufactured (exactly what processing conditions were involved)
- under what conditions (temperature, pressure, exposure to radiation, etc.) the material is placed into service.
To be successful, a materials researcher must have a good understanding of the relationship between structures and properties. As the processing-structure-property-performance relationships are vital, we attempt to investigate the nanostructures of alloys and thin-film materials.
